The Right Way To Oil Your Hair

It’s time to get all lubricated, moisturized, and shiny! Today I want to talk about oiling your hair. This is a great way to improve your hair’s health, look, and styling, and it doesn’t have to be expensive.

But it’s essential to do it with the right tools and in the right way to take care of your hair, making it luscious and quenched. Read some more about what you should use on your hair, when’s the right time to oil, and how to use the oil best.

What Oil Should I use?

The oil you use on your hair will depend mainly on what your hair needs. Whether it’s broken and dry, slow-growing and dandruff prone, or just straight up dull, you’ll want to pick the right oil.

After finding the oil that will work best for your needs, please, please, please do an allergy test. Before soaking your head and sensitive scalp, ensure you won’t give yourself hives all over. Section off a small part of your scalp to test the oil 24 hours before you plan to oil up. This can help you swerve a lot of heartaches later on.

Coconut Oil is superb for dull, damaged, or dry hair. You should also use it if your hair is brittle, slow-growing, or has split ends.

Almond Oil is a go-to for those of us who suffer from dandruff. It’s also great for dry and damaged hair, slow-growing hair, or people suffering from hair loss issues.

Olive oil is excellent for soothing frizzy hair and healing damage while bringing in shine. It’s also a phenomenal treatment for dandruff-prone hair.

How To Oil Your Hair

Coconut Oil

Frequency: Once a week.

Tip: Try to use organic whenever possible. You can usually find good quality coconut oil at bulk stores.

Coconut oil melts at room temperature, so holding some in your hand will help it turn liquid quickly. Apply to dry hair. If you have oily roots, only apply them to the ends of your hair. If you have a dry scalp, do your roots too. Let it sitting for 30 minutes before washing with an alcohol-free shampoo.

Almond Oil

Frequency: Once a week, or every wash in smaller quantities.

Tip: Gently warm some oil up before using it.

You can rub it on your scalp before bed, keeping the oil on overnight before washing it out in the morning. You can also throw a few drops after shampooing to restore moisture and prevent breakage or split ends. A favorite is to rub some onto your hair after towel drying, combing it through, and air drying for extra shine and zero tangles.

Olive Oil

Frequency: Once a week.

Tip: Add some lemon juice every other week to fight dandruff.

This works on dry or wet hair. Use one to two tablespoons to coat your hair. Throw a shower cap on for 30 minutes, then shampoo thoroughly, rinsing with cold water. (If you hate cold showers, try flipping your head over and holding the shower head over only your hair. That takes some sting out of it.)
